With this foundation and purpose, Palantir provides innovative solutions in data integration and analytics and plays a critical role in a wide range of industries.

History and growth

Palantir Technologies was founded in 2003 by Peter Thiel, Nathan Gettings, Joe Lonsdale, Stephen Cohen, and Alex Karp. The company’s name comes from the all-seeing magic crystal ball, the “Palantir,” in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. The company was initially started with the goal of enhancing national security through data analytics.

The Early Years (2003-2009)

After its founding in 2003, Palantir received initial funding from Peter Thiel and an investment from In-Q-Tel, the venture capital arm of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), which was instrumental in the development of Palantir’s technology. During this time, Palantir worked with computer scientists and intelligence analysts to develop a data analytics platform. In 2009, Palantir gained prominence for its discovery of cyberespionage networks GhostNet and Shadow Network.

The Growth Years (2010-2015)

Since 2010, Palantir has accelerated its growth by partnering with various government organizations. In 2010, Palantir’s software played a key role in the U.S. government’s Accounting Transparency and Anti-Fraud Project, during which the company helped connect the databases of several U.S. government agencies, including the CIA, FBI, and NSA. In 2013, Palantir secured an additional $196 million in funding, and in 2014, the company was expected to win nearly $1 billion in contracts.

Recent developments (2016-present)

Since 2016, Palantir has expanded into the private sector and expanded its presence in the commercial data analytics market. Palantir went public in September 2020 with an initial public offering (IPO) on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). In recent years, the company has seen significant growth in revenue from the commercial segment, particularly in the U.S. commercial market. By 2021, Palantir reported revenue of $1.54 billion, reflecting a 41% year-over-year growth.

Palantir now provides critical data analytics solutions to both governments and private companies, and continues to strengthen its global footprint.
